Under development!! International Standard for JPEG AI Learning-Based Image Coding System

The INCITS/JPEG Committee is participating in the development of an International Standard for Information technology – JPEG AI Learning-Based Image Coding System, ISO/IEC 6048.

Already there are four parts at relatively initial stages of development for JPEG AI Learning-Based Image Coding System, as follows:

  • ISO/IEC 6048 Part 1: Core coding system
  • ISO/IEC 6048 Part 2: Profiling
  • ISO/IEC 6048 Part 3: Reference Software
  • ISO/IEC 6048 Part 4: Conformance

Standardizing JPEG AI Learning-Based Image Coding System will apply machine learning tools to achieve substantially better compression efficiency than existing image coding systems. As well, this technology will promote features desirable for an efficient distribution and consumption of images.

The scope of the JPEG AI project is the creation of a learning-based image coding standard offering a single-stream, compact compressed domain representation, targeting both human visualization, with significant compression efficiency improvement over image coding standards in common use at equivalent subjective quality, and effective performance for image processing and computer vision tasks, with the goal of supporting a royalty-free baseline. In addition, this technology will be beneficial for Cloud storage, Visual surveillance, Autonomous vehicles and devices, Image collection storage and management, Live monitoring of visual data, Media distribution, and evaluation of run-time complexity, all of which are related to the booming AI ecosystem.

INCITS/JPEG, a Task Group (TG) of INCITS/Multimedia Coding Technical Committee (TC) that is responsible for activities and project development conducted at the international level for the standardization of coded representation of audio, picture, multimedia and hypermedia information - and of sets of compression and control functions for use with such information - such as: audio information, bi-level and limited bits-per-pixel still pictures; computer graphics images; moving pictures and associated audio, multimedia and hypermedia information for real-time final form interchange; and audio visual interactive scriptware.
