INCITS Forms New Technical Committee on Cyber Security

Interested Parties Welcome at June 7-8, 2005 Meeting

Washington, DC, May 20, 2005-The InterNational Committee for Information Technology Standards (INCITS) has established a new INCITS technical committee on Cyber Security (CS1). The Cyber Security technical committee’s area of work will include standardization in the management of information security, systems, and third party information security service providers, intrusion detection, network security,
incident handling, IT Security evaluation and assurance, security assessment of operational systems, security requirements for cryptographic modules, protection profiles, role-based access control, and security checklists and metrics.

 “The establishment of this new committee marks the next step for INCITS in its role as a leading body for national and international voluntary consensus cyber security standardization.” said Michael D. Hogan of the Information Technology Laboratory, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Hogan, who is the INCITS-appointed Interim Convener for the technical committee added, “Such standards are the key to securing a cyberspace that is enabling new businesses and new modes of business around the world.”

Membership on INCITS CS1 is open to all directly and materially affected interests. The technical committee operates under the ANSI-accredited procedures of INCITS and all eligible attendees at this initial meeting shall be considered voting members. All requests
for membership, RSVPs for the formation meeting and any meeting contributions should be sent to Deborah Spittle (dspittle@itic.org). Contributions received by May 24, 2005, will be posted to the technical committee’s two-week draft agenda for the first meeting of INCITS CS1.

The initial meeting of INCITS CS1 will be held at the ITI offices in Washington, DC (1250 Eye Street NW, Suite 200) on June 7 and 8, 2005, starting at 10:00 a.m. on June 7th. More information on INCITS Cyber Security (CS1) can be obtained through the INCITS Web site http://www.incits.org/.
